What happened to Black Friday?

Words have meaning - and, knowing that although ALL lives matter, there is historical and cultural significance of words that divide. This is NOT about being politically correct!

How did it start?

Most people don’t know the history and significance of the word ‘BLACK' in Black Friday; and, maybe it doesn’t matter.  These words were first used to describe an 1869 financial crisis, in which corruption and stock fraud caused the U.S. gold market to collapse entirely.

Black Friday and women's rights?

This ‘holiday' found its way into other historical moments. In 1910, suffragette demonstrators marched on a Friday in London, the culmination of a decades-long campaign by British women fighting for voting rights. Police and many male bystanders responded with violence against the women, securing the protest's nickname as "Black Friday.”

Why the day after Thanksgiving?

It was nearly a century later that the name had anything to do with the day after Thanksgiving. In the 1960s, police in Philadelphia started using the term to describe the hectic, overcrowded day that came as families rushed into the city ahead of the weekend's annual Army-Navy football game.

Say goodbye to Black Friday?

COVID-19: Facts vs Fallacies
COVID-19: Facts vs Fallacies

At the best of times, it can be challenging to sort facts from fallacies - During this emerging COVID-19 pandemic, this risk is compounding. We are committed to do our best at providing you with most relevant information. In consultation with a risk management consultant, we have compiled a short list of resources.  Feel free to check out as many or as few as you wish ...

    • 2. Risk factors

    • 3. Action steps

2.

Reducing Risk Factors

Physical distancing is critical - Rules regarding ‘SAFE’ distances are myths

  • In absence of wind, a single sneeze transmits the virus 3 meters or 10 feet before it drops to ground and is no longer airborne

    • When active (running, biking, etc,) or in windy conditions, a single sneeze will spreads a much longer distance

    • The rules regarding physical ‘distancing’ do not eliminate risk of catching virus

    • In relation to this virus, ‘safety' is an illusion

  • Shared space (cars, public transport, etc) adds exponential variables - Virus survival time is as follows

    • Metal surface: at least 12 hours; possibly multiple days

    • Fabric: Survives at least 6 to 12 hours - Normal laundry detergent appears to limit virus survival, but there is no proof

    • Hands: HIGH risk - Virus only lives 5 to 10 minutes on hands - BUT rubbing eyes or nose unwittingly leads to rapid spreading

  • Wash hands frequently with bacterial soap

3.

Protection - Airborne and direct contact transmission

  • Improvised face masks - Disclaimer under rapidly emerging conditions, unproven speculative theories and options abound.

    • It is not possible for me to follow my normal process - 3 experts from different fields must have facts that demonstrate validity

    • Yet, in a time like this, having something that is proven to NOT be harmful - yet, might be beneficial, is worth the investment to consider further.

    • Here is a link to what appears to be prudent recommendations:

  • Reduce Direct Contact - Any surface area that has been exposed is suspect

    • Open package deliveries outside, and discard external packaging

    • Use gloves and/or wash hands with bacterial soap immediately after direct contact

    • Frequently clean surfaces in common use areas

  • Social distancing is a myth - this is a time to strengthen emotional and social connection, but from a distance

4.

Timelines for COVID-19

Depending on who is speaking, rumours abound: There are NO predictable timelines

  • There are NO reliable timelines

    • Certainly self initiated quarantines are smart: The challenge is to know the duration. 2 week recommendations are arbitrary

    • Unless you are tested and proven to be virus free, you can still be a SYMPTOM FREE carrier, and be actively transmitting this invisible virus

    • There are more unknowns than knowns - proceed cautiously

  • I recommend you pre-arrange tele-health access - having access to medical services without needing to go to the hospital or a medical facility is critical

  • Ensure that you have a reasonable supply of medications required as it might become harder to access the medications you require, to manage your current medical conditions

What Sibylle and Sally learned about business in the last 3 years …

  • More people equals more chaos - Everything takes more TIME and requires more EFFORT

    • Joining forces with other entrepreneurs MIGHT seem smart - It appears to generate more revenue, but only if you ignore the expenses

  • Working harder and longer doesn’t necessarily lead to better quality - And, quality is in the eye of the beholder

    • As advisors, we can support business professionals in exploring the facts that matter to THEM - and, help them prioritize with parameters that impact their business endeavours

  • Being certain means you believe you are right, even when you are wrong - Learning to question the UNQUESTIONED truths of an industry leads to game changers

    • There is NO right way - Strengthening business relationships involves accepting people where they are: Not everyone is open to exploring UNQUESTIONED truths

The last year has been a profound year of personal and business growth - And, if Sally and Sibylle had known then what they know now, the journey would have been even easier and more enjoyable. As a gift to you, Rustproofing Your Business has captured the lessons learned
